From what I’ve read, they don’t suffer the IMS issue so at least there’s that.

IMS failure is why 996s are relatively cheap. Here’s a link that covers it way better than I ever could: http://theimssolution.com/ims-101/

Ims issues refers to the IMS bearing in the engine failing which can require a new engine. 996 non-turbo engines had IMS bearing that are basically a ticking time bomb.
The turbos were somehow shielded from this fault, meaning their engines are less likely to grenade

My neighbour has had one from new to my dismay since that thing is the loudest idling object in the known universe but as my sleepy ears can attest to, the damn thing started up every morning. So I’m guessing they are reliable to some extent.

They’re not unreliable at all. For a car of their capabilities, they’re remarkably durable, easily daily driveable. Not the easiest thing to work on, but there’s a way to do everything. They’ve got a lot of performance headroom too, so even mildly modified cars don’t seem to suffer. If you’re paying for the work, I’d figure on 3 grand a year for regular maintenance if you’re piling on the miles, but you’ll want to have a rainy day fund in case something does go wrong. As good as they are, they are a supercar, and things can happen. Brakes are fairly expensive, most need clutches by 50k or so, and there’s some well known issues with a coolant fitting on top of the engine failing, but that’s about all I can think of off the top of my head. The newest of them is now 10 years old, so you’ll need to be watchful of all the plastic and rubber bits in the car’s mechanicals. Very good cars overall though.

you're tempting me to buy one so bad... I just need $3k a year to have in case it goes kaput....
